Elena's Story: A Journey of Strength and Community Support
Thirteen-year-old Elena’s world changed overnight. One morning, she woke up completely unable to move—a terrifying and confusing experience that would lead her and her family down an unexpected path. After rushed trips to the hospital and numerous tests, doctors diagnosed her with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a rare neurological condition that affects the spinal cord and leads to sudden muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis.
Elena spent weeks in the hospital, working tirelessly to regain the ability to do everyday things most of us take for granted. Relearning how to walk, eat, and even dress herself became her daily challenges. Despite the grueling physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT), Elena’s spirit remained strong. Her progress has been inspiring, though she continues to face some weakness, particularly on her right side.
Recently, Elena made the brave step of returning to school, though it has been an exhausting journey. Processing information is still a challenge for her, and every day is a reminder of the strength and resilience she continues to show in navigating these obstacles. Her determination has touched the hearts of so many people in her community and beyond.
In a beautiful display of support, our community came together to raise over $10,000 to help cover Elena’s medical expenses. Thanks to the amazing kids who held Do Good Lemonade Stands over the summer, we were able to fulfill one of Elena’s biggest dreams—to visit Cedar Point. Elena and her family enjoyed three full days of fun, complete with fast lane passes to make the most of every moment, creating unforgettable memories.
